“The journey of birth can be challenging, intense, rewarding, confusing, transformative, all or none of the above – but each birth & postpartum experience is unique to you and your baby. I am honored to provide my clients with unwavering support as you navigate this path and settle into your “new normal,” however that may look for you.”
Erica’s Approach to Doula Work
Erica has complete faith in the birth process and trusts that babies know how to be born. This trust, as well as the belief that all birthing people deserve to be informed about their options, drives her work as a doula. A self-described birth nerd, Erica is passionate about educating families about the normalcy of labor, birth, and postpartum so that they are well-equipped to make the choices that feel best for them.
In supporting birthing people, Erica strives to foster a sense of safety, security, and empowerment, accomplished by utilizing a combination of physical comfort measures, intuition, and ability to simply hold space for the varied experiences of the labor process.
Erica has been fascinated by pregnancy and birth for as long as she can remember – probably a result of hearing her mother’s birth stories often (including that of her own precipitous birth). In the fall of 2015, Erica was invited to attend her sister-in-law’s labor as she brought Erica’s niece into the world. After witnessing the strength and determination her sister-in-law demonstrated that day, Erica knew she wanted to pursue doula work.
Shortly after completing her birth doula training with Mother Tree Doula Services, Erica began volunteering with the Gateway Doula Project in addition to taking on private clients. She has been honored to support families with non-traditional structures, immigrant families, teen parents, and many others.
Erica also has the joy of supporting new families through her work at Milagros Boutique – Portland’s doula-owned mama/baby boutique attached to the Doula Love classroom, specializing in cloth diapering and babywearing education.
As a dog lover with more than five years’ experience training her own sassy little small breed mixes, Erica enjoys helping her clients acclimate their pups to the newest human family additions. Consistency and positive reinforcement go a long way in helping dogs feel safe and comfortable with the new sights, sounds, and smells of babies!
Outside of work, Erica loves spending time with her aforementioned sassy dogs (and slightly less sassy guinea pig), spoiling her niece, and cross stitching while binge listening to podcasts.
