Tisha West, Birth & Postpartum Doula

“As a doula, I believe that all women should be empowered with the knowledge and support they need to create their own birth stories.”

Tisha’s Approach to Doula Work

I work to provide a trusting, nurturing and safe environment throughout your pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum care. Through open minded, educational and informative dialogue about pregnancy and childbirth, I will work with you to identify what an “ideal birth” means for you and how I can support you the most.

Creating an environment that is calming and safe for you during labor is of major importance. I will make use of massage, acupressure, breathing techniques, and positioning techniques, and will provide emotional support for your comfort and relaxation. I care deeply about and fully support the choices of every, individual mother, and strive to meet your needs and aid you with decisions about your pregnancy and labor.

Tisha’s Background

I had the privilege of witnessing the influential role doulas played in the births of close friends and also got to see the beneficial impact they had on the mother and her partner during what was one of the most sacred times in their lives. After this experience, I felt a compelling draw to do doula work and, in 2013, I began my doula journey. Around this same time I discovered that I not only had the passion and desire to do birth work, but it was also in my blood: my great-grandmother and great-aunt were doulas as well.

One year ago, after building up over 15 years of experience working in women’s reproductive healthcare in Washington, D.C., I came to Portland to join this wonderful birthing community. When not doing doula work, I enjoy hiking, cooking, dancing, traveling and discovering all of the natural beauty that Oregon has to offer with my lovely partner.

I am a DONA trained doula and have completed an intensive birth doula internship with Mother Tree Birth Services, as well as trainings in Bekung Belly Binding and hypnobirthing. I am also a lactation counselor, certified by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice, and find bliss in the art of breastfeeding! I strive to assist new mothers in creating the most positive, nurturing breastfeeding experience possible, while respecting the choices of all my clients. I have a constant desire to educate myself further and consistently seek training and educational opportunities to enhance my knowledge and skills as a doula.
