Transition to Toddler

The Toddlers Years is such an amazing and exciting time of growth, change and pure fun!
Your baby has grown into a toddler; she’s exploring the world around her, testing boundaries, absorbing information like a sponge, exerting her will, and changing too fast. Learning how to best communicate with your new toddler, whether she knows 2, 20, or 200 words, will make this special time easier (and more fun) for your whole family.  This 4 week class series will focus on communication skills through the subjects of language, music, safety and boundaries, and play.  These classes are intended to serve both parents and children, there will be information, concrete skills practice, and handouts to educate the adults and fun activities to engage the little ones.

Week One Language for Toddlers : Parents know that long before their kiddos were stringing sounds together into words, they were taking in everything around them, and while they may not have been speaking, they were certainly developing their own way to communicate. As children enter into toddlerhood and their ability to comprehend and develop language strengthens, so does the potential for frustration. In the language portion of this series we will talk about communication in its many forms and steps that parents can take to make sure their child is feeling heard as they form a greater understanding of the world around them.

Week Two – Music for Toddlers : Before your baby learned to walk they were dancing to music; musicality is innate to all humans. Because music taps into both the language and pattern recognizing parts of the brain, it can be a unique tool for communicating with preverbal children. Learn how to harness music to foster better communication with your child, to teach specific concepts, and to have fun with your child. Whether you have a background in music or are a complete beginner this will be a fun class for you and your child to explore music together.

Week Three – Safety and Boundaries : As your child grows she will naturally start to take more risks and test limits. Teaching your child how to navigate this world safely has to start early, but that can be a challenge as your toddler’s will and desire for control gets stronger.  In this class we will cover the concept of consent, setting boundaries, avoiding power struggles, and practice skills that will directly translate into the real world that will make exploring the world with your newly mobile little one easier (and less anxiety inducing) for both of you.

Week Four Learning to Play, Playing to Learn :  Learning is not limited to what happens in school, in fact, babies begin learning before they are even born. As your child enter their second year of life, play becomes an important part of how they learn important life skills including (but not limited to) social skills, communication, and creative problem solving. In this segment we will discuss the skills that are developing during this time in a child’s life and what tools we can give them to enhance their ability to learn through play.
