This is an introductory (yet in depth), 7-hour lactation management course for professionals that support new families. Including, but not limited to: Doulas, Midwives, Childbirth Educators and Social Service workers. Participants will meet a number of learning outcomes covering the following:

What is covered in this workshop?

  • The benefits of breastfeeding for parent, baby and society

  • The anatomy and physiology of human milk production and baby’s ability to latch

  • How to use formula as safely as possible when necessary

  • The key components of the first feed

  • How to help achieve a good latch

  • What a good latch looks like

  • Common obstacles to feeding in the first week

  • Solutions to common problems in the first week

  • The progression of milk from colostrum to mature milk

  • Answering common feeding questions.

  • Use of active listening skills to identify lactation problems

  • Contraindications to breastfeeding

  • Possible obstacles to breastfeeding

  • Proper pumping and storage of human milk

  • And, most importantly, knowing when to refer to a lactation professional, and what different experience levels of lactation specialists are available
